Is it bad because of the low population? Care to expand more on your experiences in AoC?

Age of Conan only ever peaked at a subscriber base of ~450,000 just after launch. I'd say there'd only be 100k to 180k playing at the moment.

The game has come leaps and bounds since launch, and old subscribers are being pleasantly surprised by the game's improvements (e.g. performance, content, etc.).

And if low population is indicative of a bad game, blastoise466, then perhaps you missed the news that Mythic is shutting-down about 60 of its WAR servers in the coming weeks due to dwindling populations.

I believe the "1,000,000" came from boxes sold to RETAILERS(of which a vast majority were returned).

The actual numbers of PLAYERS that bought the game were much closer to the 500k mark. If the game is maintaining 450k I am quite impressed, almost enough to take back the bashing I gave the game at release...almost.

AoC will remain a game that had a great advertising campaign(bordering on the fraudulant). It never delivered many features and so never met its potential.

I highly doubt the game will ever see the console, which it was obviously designed for in the first place. A big reason it failed to begin with.

Not so much dwindling populations as much as the playerbase being spread too thin. Consolidating the players onto less servers is a good thing to do earlier rather then later. Also, It's only going to improve the experience for the people on the servers that are being closed, as they will be all on the same few servers now, instead of being spread across 43 (amount of NA servers closing) servers. It's going to save Mythic a lot of money in terms of server maintenance and free up resources to further improve the game.

There isn't a chance in the 7th circle of Hell that AoC has 450k active players. I'd be shocked if they had over 100k.

Read what I typed a bit more closely:

If they did have 1 million players they would have broadly published such news

I'm not sure if I'd go straight to recommending another MMORPG right away. I mean just because it doesn't have all that much players, doesn't mean it's that awful. First of all. Just enough players to fill one server is in the end all you really need, isn't it? You don't see any of the people on the other servers, do you?

And besides. The game is still kinda good, even though its lack of population. It got good graphics. A fun way to fight. Neat way of getting quests. It's still fun. And as long as there is enough people to fill the server I'm on, I don't see any reason to swap game ..

"Max, dearest of all my friends. I was supposed to be hero"
"I have low self-esteem"
"A golden bird that flyes away, a candle stickle flame"
"Ken kicks everyones ass, including Barbie"

Low population doesn't quite mean you get off the boat straight off. I've played private servers in other MMO's before, where there are only a few thousand people active at a time, I must say it does get quite fun. That is until there's a single group which makes up a third of the population and they go around absolutely decimating everything without their clan insignia in the name.

Some of the Conan servers actually have decent population now. I know that Set has players at every level it seems. The free trial has also brought some new people. They really need to do a warhammer type of free trial for people with a cancelled subscription to get them to resub.

Or better yet, extend the free to trial to at least 14 days.

I tried the one week trial, and including the download time for th giant client and work daily life interruptions I barely had 3 hours put into the game.

I liked what I've seen thought, AoC is far from the early muddy release, and the graphics are absolutely gorgeous.

The problem is people hit max level 2 weeks into the game. There were so many exploits and loop-holes it was just silly. When you have that kind of sh-t product you end up with a game(and players) similar to Darkfall. Just a gankfest for 12yo's that want to look at their female toon naked.

No reason to start now, let it die so Funcom can screw up the next big name they buy.

AoC was horrible. As Hemi said the exploits, loop-holes, and easily obtainable level cap made it full of SucK. The guild I was in had a few of the bosses on farm before they were supposed to even be available. 90% of the people in our guild had T1 less than 3 weeks after retail release thanks to an exploit that was ridiculously easy to figure out.

I don't care if they have improved AoC, it will never be what they had initially promised.
